Valley Central High School hosted its Thirteenth Annual Science Research Symposium on Tuesday, May 23rd at Valley Central High School in Montgomery NY followed by a dinner at the Ward’s Bridge Inn. The keynote speaker for the evening was alumni Eric Ulrich, BS of Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and Dr. Eric Evans DVM of Flannery Animal Hospital was the honored guest. The senior presenters were Sara Belknap, River Castelonia, and Angela Zhu.
The Science Symposium, is the culmination of two to three years of original research conducted by students in the Advanced Science Program at Valley Central High School. Participating students start their research sophomore year with the goal of presenting their projects as a senior. Guided by a committee made up of community leaders, the students select a topic they are interested in, devise a hypothesis, conduct experiments to prove the theory and summarize their research. Topics that have been covered in the past include: music in the school system, better uses for wheelchairs and plant growth.
This year marks the first time a member of Flannery Animal Hospital’s team of doctors has been honored at the event. Dr. Eric Evans has been serving as one of the Science Symposium’s community leaders for the past seven years. “It has been my pleasure to serve as a mentor to students in our community” states Dr. Eric Evans, “to spur kids’ interests. It is amazing to see what they can do, to listen to their interests and view their potential.”
Flannery Animal Hospital, located at 789 Little Britain Road in New Windsor, has been caring for our community’s pets since 1959.
